We treat morning sickness and HG with a tailored approach.

OBGYN approved and run by an Emergency Medicine Physician, the Morning Sickness Clinic focuses on treating your symptoms of nausea and vomiting, while the OBGYN or midwife caring for your pregnancy continues to see you for the overall health of your pregnancy.

What to expect for your first appointment

01 — Get ahead of your nausea symptoms and book your appointment online.

Research shows that getting early treatment for hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) and morning sickness can prevent symptoms from progressing. Book online and we will send you our intake forms to fill out before your appointment. If you are experiencing HG or moderate to severe morning sickness, our services are most likely covered under insurance! If possible, bring a note from your last prenatal visit, or have your pregnancy provider’s office fax us the note to 205-395-6643. If you haven’t yet seen a pregnancy provider, you can still make an appointment at our clinic.

For iron infusions, have your pregnancy healthcare provider fax your lab results before your appointment!

02 — Doctor evaluation

At your first appointment, Dr. Housholder will sit down with you and discuss your symptoms and your goals. Your first appointment can be via telehealth or in person. He will help you decide what fluids and treatments are best for you, and whether you should have labs drawn. He will answer any questions you might have about what is safest for you and baby. If you are making an appointment to get an Iron Infusion, Dr. Housholder will discuss the process with you.

03 — The Treatment Itself

Our nurse will establish an IV, and you will then be taken to a quiet, comfortable room with blankets, heating pads and low lighting. Expect it to take about two hours to receive a full treatment. We have WiFi and a playroom! Some treatments may cause drowsiness, but we will not give you a sedating treatment if you don’t have a ride home. We recommend bringing a good book, knitting or something to work on!

Note: Visitors and patients are not allowed any outside food or drinks and must refrain from wearing fragrances due to the sensitive nature of pregnant noses and nausea triggers. Water bottles with still or sparking water are permitted. We have drinks and snacks available for patients.

04 — Labs, during your appointment

If you need labs performed due to excessive vomiting or dehydration, we will draw blood and run these labs in the clinic. We will give you the results and discuss them with you during your appointment.

05 — Easy Communication

Our clinic is always a text away. Patients can communicate with Dr. H and our nurses through our HIPPA compliant texting platform. Get your questions answered quickly and easily.

06 — Continuing care

We will schedule future infusions while you are at your appointment, but if your symptoms change or increase in frequency, please call us and we’ll get you in as soon as we can! Most patients with HG need an infusion twice a week, and some even more. The physician will help determine how often you need treatment, and schedule a followup appointment for you every 2 to 4 weeks until your symptoms improve or stabilize.

“I think it’s so important for you to feel in control of your pregnancy,” - Dr. Andrew Housholder

“Some pregnant people worry about effects of treatments on their babies, so they wait until they are very dehydrated to seek help. If you’re really worried and anxious about your treatment, if you don’t get your questions answered, you’re not going to feel better. And that’s what we want. We want you to feel better.”
